Hella Arens: Emslander receives honor for decades of volunteer work!
VfL Emslage met ASV Altenlingen in an exciting district league game, but the highlight of this encounter took place far away from football. Hella Arens, a true veteran of the club, was honored for her decades of volunteer work. The award took place in the VfL Emslage club room, where family, club members and sports representatives came together to honor Arens for her loyalty and commitment. Michael Koop, the president of the Emsland district sports association, presented the honor, supported by Heinz-Gerd Evers, the chairman of the NFV Emsland district, who also presented a gift. Both emphasized the important role that Hella Arens plays in the club's life and acknowledged her tireless efforts in Emsland.
Hella Arens has been active at VfL Emslage since the early 2000s. Her volunteer journey began when she supported her husband Franz Arens. She was always involved in service and sales at home games and club events. The sudden death of her husband in the summer of 2020 could make many think of retiring, but Hella proves that her heart beats for the club and remains loyal to VfL. “People like Hella Arens are the backbone of our clubs,” explained Michael Koop, “their commitment deserves the highest recognition.”
Volunteering – a mainstay in sport
But what actually makes volunteering in sport so important? According to the experts at the sports magazine owayo.de, it is ultimately the committed volunteers who make a diverse range of sports possible. In Germany, around 15.72 million people volunteer and help ensure that every sports club stays alive. Volunteers in sports take on a variety of tasks, ranging from administration to sporting activities to organizational tasks. VfL Emslage, like many other clubs, benefits enormously from this commitment, which goes beyond the normal membership fees.
Voluntary work is not only important for the clubs, but also offers those involved the opportunity for personal development and social participation. Depending on their level of commitment, sports clubs can show gratitude in the form of free drinks or reimbursement of travel expenses. Volunteers also benefit from tax advantages. All of this makes volunteering an indispensable pillar in sport. How important this commitment is was once again made clear by the example of Hella Arens and shows that every help, no matter how small, counts.
Hella Arens is an example of many volunteers who contribute with passion and dedication to enriching club life. “We are grateful for their commitment,” says VfL Emslage, “because it is people like Hella who make up the soul of our club.” Her story is inspiring and shows how valuable and important volunteering in sport is - for the clubs and the community.
