Max Heermann-Többenotke, a 20-year-old mechanical engineering student at Osnabrück University, has realized a real passion project with his 50-year-old VW Bulli. The van, which originally comes from California and was not roadworthy for over two decades, was lovingly converted in four months. For him it was an exciting undertaking to convert the classic car to electric drive and install a solar roof. This innovative project enables his van to travel up to 150 kilometers per day using solar energy alone, which speaks for sustainable travel. The converted van even successfully passed the TÜV inspection. Max and his companions undertook an impressive journey to Croatia, covering around 3,000 kilometers. Along the way, they were even able to use solar energy to run an air fryer and refrigerator, providing additional convenience. Max would like to share these experiences with others and convince them of the diverse possibilities of alternative drive systems.

However, vehicle electrification is not just limited to modern cars. Uwe Koenzen, an engineer and aquatic ecologist from the Rhineland, shows with his extensive collection of vintage cars that classic models also have a promising future. Among his treasures is a converted Porsche 911 SC from 1981, which, as an e01 electric car, now achieves a peak output of 518 kW (704 hp). Koenzen is familiar with current developments in electromobility and notes that there is great interest in conversion kits for classic cars. He emphasizes the need for a sustainable mobility strategy that also gives older models a chance.

The future of mobility

The topic of sustainable mobility will be essential in the future. The rapidly increasing need for charging station infrastructure and the expansion of renewable energies are crucial to meeting EU requirements.
