Sniffer dogs in action: Over 110,000 euros found by Cody!

In Lower Saxony, the police's brilliant sleuths are hard at work. In particular, the money-sniffing dogs, which emerged from drug-sniffing dogs, are causing a stir and being successful in the fight against crime. During searches in East Frisia and Emsland, these clever dogs were able to uncover over 110,000 euros - a remarkable achievement! The Belgian shepherd “Habbo” and his colleague “Cody” have proven to be particularly talented. During an operation in Meppen, Cody alone found an impressive 80,000 euros, which were cleverly hidden in cupboards and safes.

The Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior is enthusiastic about the results. As NDR reports, the use of money-sniffing dogs is viewed as consistently positive. These dogs have been in service for over a decade now and are specifically trained to search for money. Their training links the ability to detect drug traces with the recognition of money. In fact, it is estimated that 70 to 80 percent of all banknotes come into contact with drug residue, making the work of these dogs even more important.

The development of sniffer dog teams

There has been an exciting development since 2014: Before this time, police officers were solely entrusted with the task of searching for cash, which often had only moderate success. Thanks to the introduction and training of money detection dogs, this has now changed fundamentally. Internal training and further education have enormously increased the success of the operations. Many of the 39 sniffer dogs in use, which are on average eight years old, originally specialized in drugs and received further training in finding money. In this way, they can make optimal use of their talents in both areas in the future.

Another special feature of these dogs is their training. They receive rewards, be it in the form of toys or food, for banknotes they find. Whether freshly printed, used sheet music or even high-quality counterfeits - they are not afraid to sniff out everything that the crime fighter's heart desires. During court-ordered searches, sniffer dogs are indispensable helpers who also carry out their duties in explosive situations.

A look at the future

The Ministry of the Interior confirms that the use of money detection dogs will be part of the standard of police work in Lower Saxony in the future. Past successes underpin this plan, as Dieniedersachsen and Volksstimme emphasize. With effective training and modernized methods, the dogs are ready to enrich the fight against crime. The joy of the successes grows bigger every day, and the hope for a safe Lower Saxony grows.

In summary, it can be said: The sniffer dogs are not only developing into indispensable partners of the police, but are also ensuring a measure of security in society. A big compliment to the four-legged helpers who uncover a lot with their noses - there's actually something there!
