Van Gogh in Drenthe: A film about his artistic beginnings!
A new film about the life of the famous painter Vincent van Gogh is taking shape. “23 Letters from Vincent” is currently being filmed on the Dutch border with Emsland. This film focuses on the beginnings of his artistic work and his homeland, the province of Drenthe. It was only at the age of 30 that Vincent decided to focus on his passion for art. During his short stay in Drenthe from October to December 1883, he painted numerous local people and the surrounding nature, often inspired by everyday motifs that meant a lot to him. Van Gogh only sold a single painting during his lifetime, but he left behind an impressive body of work with hundreds of paintings and over 1,000 drawings that only received recognition posthumously. The film draws on 23 letters that van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo and which delve deep into his thoughts and emotions.
The filming location in Bourtanger Moor, where the final scenes are shot, brings both the natural beauty and the unique atmosphere of the region into the picture. The focus is on Van Gogh's influence on local residents and the special connection to this area. In the Van Gogh House in Nieuw Amsterdam, which now serves as a small museum and shows the room in which he lived, visitors can learn more about his time in Drenthe. Danielle van der Ark, who offers tours, emphasizes that van Gogh was recommended to Drenthe by his friends and other painters.
Current developments
Despite the exciting advances in production, there are also challenges. Ashton Brothers star Pim Muda suffered a broken elbow that required months of recovery, but he is now fit again. Behind the scenes, Peter Nillesen, the leading actor in the last production “Grenzeloos Verraad”, is working on the realization of this film.
To finance the final filming, the production team started a crowdfunding campaign, which was launched today. With a goal of 10,000 euros, the necessary budget should be collected within 40 days. Anyone interested can find out more and offer their support on the Zodfilm page.
Artistic meaning
Vincent van Gogh, born on March 30, 1853 in Groot-Zundert, is often considered one of the most influential painters in art history. His works are characterized by strong colors, emotional expressiveness and often dramatic themes. Van Gogh took the simple French landscape and everyday moments as an opportunity to show his unique sensitivity and creative eye. In Paris he found inspiration through exchanges with other artists and developed his distinctive style, which was later associated with art movements such as Impressionism. The numerous works he left behind tell of his constant struggle with his own identity and the society of his time, which makes him a fascinating figure in art history.
There is also an immersive exhibition in Hamburg that shows the art of the Dutch masters - including van Gogh's works. This offers visitors the opportunity to engage intensively with the work of this extraordinary artist and to understand the developments of his artistic career.
