Campsite in Hooksiel: Interested parties wanted for pearl in need of renovation!
Wangerland Touristik GmbH (WTG), the most important company in the municipality of Wangerland, is facing a decisive turning point. On July 17, 2025, the GmbH announced that it had to go bankrupt, but wanted to reorganize on its own. Due to the financial mess caused by the exorbitant increase in construction costs for the “Thalasso Marine Spa” in Horumersiel from an initial 8 million to an estimated 23 million euros, an expression of interest process was started for the campsite in Hooksiel. This is reported by the NWZonline.
The requirements for those interested in taking over the campsite, which covers a total area of around 111,111 square meters and includes existing buildings and ongoing operations, have now been published. There is also the option of taking out a lease for an additional area of around 382,940 square meters, which belongs to the Weser-Ems Regional Development Office. The WTG demands that camping operations continue without interruption and that all employment relationships are taken over. Anyone who would like to submit an offer must also submit a continuation concept that shows prospects for the further development of the place. Not an easy game, you could say!
The challenge of renovation
The Wangerland local council determined the weighting in a non-public meeting: The renovation must be carried out sustainably and taking into account the interests of the creditors and the community. Around 180 employees work for WTG, which not only operates campsites in Hooksiel and Schillig, but also organizes indoor swimming pools in Hooksiel and Horumersiel as well as tourist marketing and events. Their salaries are secured by insolvency money for three months, but it is unclear how the renovation will affect the guest house in Hooksiel. The managing director, Torsten Riedel, is accompanied by restructuring expert Dr. Christian Kaufmann from PLUTA Rechtsanwalts GmbH supported WTG to keep it on track.
The deadline for offers, which must be submitted to WTG in Horumersiel in a sealed envelope, is Tuesday, August 12th. Interested parties should hurry because the process is non-binding, which means that there is no right to a purchase contract. So if you have a good knack for such businesses, you could sense a unique opportunity here!
The way forward
The coming weeks will now see the financial framework conditions examined and a restructuring concept developed. The focus is also on a comprehensive review and adjustment of all contracts as well as an optimization of processes and cost structures. The municipality, which acts as a 100 percent shareholder, could also provide financial support. All creditors are involved in this project, while a trustee is appointed to protect their interests.
Overall, there are now many cards on the table, and the success of the renovation depends largely on the next steps. We can only hope that the WTG can turn things around and get the popular campsite in Hooksiel back on track.
