Major fire in Jade-Weser-Park: Fire brigade in constant operation in Roffhausen!
In the Jade-Weser-Park industrial area in Roffhausen, an alarming major fire at the Augustin waste disposal company kept the emergency services on their toes on Sunday evening. The fire broke out around 5:30 p.m., causing massive amounts of smoke. Local authorities called on the population to close windows and doors. They also warned via the disaster warning app “Katwarn” and advised turning off the ventilation and air conditioning systems so that no pollutants could get into the building. There were visual impairments on Autobahn 29 between Sande and the Fedderwarden exit and on Federal Highway 210 between Schortens and Wilhelmshaven. Numerous firefighters, police and rescue services were on site to act quickly and bring the situation under control. All three local fire departments in Schortens as well as the Jever volunteer fire department with a turntable ladder were deployed to fight the fire. It is reported that extinguishing work is still underway, while the cause of the fire remains unclear.
But this is not the only fire that affects the Augustin waste disposal company. There was already a similar incident in Meppen on Thursday evening, about two days earlier. The fire department was also alerted there after a fire broke out in a hall where pressed, shredded plastic was stored. The flames started around 7 p.m. and the heavy smoke was visible for several kilometers. Residents were asked via the NINA warning app to keep doors and windows closed. The extinguishing work took several hours, with the Meppen, Osterbrock fire brigade and the Bundeswehr Technical Department also being on board. The Technical Relief Agency also provided support with a mobile filling station while fire-fighting water was taken from the Dortmund-Ems Canal. Despite all efforts, two firefighters were injured, one of whom even had to be hospitalized. The estimated material damage was around 100,000 euros.
Background to the cause of the fire
The importance of preventive fire protection becomes more than clear in such crisis situations. Not only are numerous fire departments involved in fighting fires, but many accidents also occur due to a lack of safety measures or inadequate controls. Statistics from fire protection in Germany suggest that comprehensive data collection on the causes of fires could help improve safety standards. In this context, the need for long-term improvements in fire safety is highlighted in order to prevent future incidents. However, the data situation is often incomplete, which makes the effectiveness of preventive measures difficult. Further information on fire protection statistics can be found on platforms such as FeuerTrutz.
The situation surrounding the Augustin waste disposal company has once again shown how quickly unexpected events can occur and how important a well-organized fire department and fast reaction times are. The next few days will show how the situation will develop, both in terms of dealing with the consequences of the major fire in Roffhausen and possible fire prevention measures in the entire Friesland district and beyond.
