Experience the theater classic The Broken Jug” live in Gifhorn!

On Monday, October 6th, things will be exciting in the Gifhorn town hall, if that Theater for Lower Saxony from Hildesheim brings Heinrich von Kleist's masterpiece “The Broken Jug” to the stage. The play, which will be required reading for high school graduates from the 2026 school year, is considered a comedy classic and deals with topics such as corruption and abuse of power in the justice system.

The action takes place on a court day in the fictional village of Huisum, where Judge Adam presides over a highly questionable trial. Unfortunately, the poor guy falls out of bed and injures himself. However, this is only the beginning of an extremely messy case: Adam himself is involved in a nighttime attack on the young Eve, who was surprised by her fiancé Ruprecht. A delicate situation because Eve knows the truth but remains silent for fear of the consequences.

Intrigue and power games

The performance not only shows Adam's efforts to cover up the case, but also Eve's inner conflict and the social hypocrisy that surrounds the entire event. She is being blackmailed by her fiancé and the village judge, while the new court councilor Walter has arrived to review the judiciary. The play brings to light the questionable machinations and criticizes how society is often not interested in the truth, but only in its own benefit.

“The Broken Jug” already has an eventful history behind it. First performed in 1808, directed by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, it has become one of the most performed works on German-speaking stages. The writer Licht, who also appears in the story, is wiser than he first appears and brings another, subtle critical perspective to the piece.

Theater and society

The entire work is part of the great tradition of German theater literature, which has not only impressed but also inspired over the years. German theater blogs illuminate how such classics reflect social and cultural developments and what important role they can play in contemporary productions. New interpretations are constantly emerging that address current topics and stimulate discussions.

With ticket prices starting at 11 euros, the performance is accessible to everyone. Tickets are available both online and at the box office. If you want to experience the mixture of everyday intrigue and profound social criticism, you definitely shouldn't miss the event in the Gifhorn town hall!
