Swimming in the Juessee is forbidden: Dangerous blue-green algae alarm in Herzberg!

In the idyllic Juessee in Herzberg am Harz, swimming experiences are currently very spoiled. Today, June 13, 2025, the health department has imposed a bathing ban for the city and district of Göttingen. The reason for this is an increased concentration of blue-green algae that has been detected in the lake, which poses a worrying health risk. The city of Herzberg am Harz and the State Health Office (NLGA) have already been informed of this measure and the corresponding warning notices will be posted in the area of the lake. [Göttingen.de].

But what makes blue-green algae so dangerous? These cyanobacterial organisms, often found in water bodies during warm weather, can cause many health problems. These include symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and even shortness of breath. There is an increased risk, especially for people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women and children. Pets, such as dogs, are also affected by the pollutants, which is why visiting the water is currently not recommended. NDR emphasizes that in extreme cases there can even be a risk of paralysis and death from suffocation through contact with contaminated water.

Be careful when bathing: health risks and prevention measures

Blue-green algae multiply massively in shallow lakes, especially in dry, warm and sunny weather. Signs of this are often green cloudy water and algae-like deposits. If you notice visible water contamination while bathing, such as streaky accumulations or dead fish, you should immediately keep your distance. However, distinguishing between harmless green algae and harmful blue-green algae is often difficult for laypeople. It is therefore strongly advisable to use official bathing areas where the water quality is regularly checked.

The city of Herzberg am Harz has also taken appropriate precautions. Citizens who have questions about this situation or need further information can contact the Citizens' Office. The opening times are as follows:

  • Montag bis Dienstag: 08:30 – 16:00 Uhr
  • Mittwoch: 08:30 – 12:30 Uhr
  • Donnerstag: 08:30 – 18:00 Uhr
  • Freitag: 08:30 – 12:00 Uhr
  • 1. Samstag im Monat: 09:00 – 12:00 Uhr

For further information, the central telephone number 05521 852-0 and the e-mail address of the citizens' office are available. Given the health risks, vigilance is required to avoid untoward incidents.

We hope that the situation in Juessee will soon be defused and the summer can be enjoyed as usual again. Until then: stay healthy and stay away from contaminated water. Further details can be found on the website of the city of Herzberg am Harz at herzberg.de.
