The roots of Halloween

But what is actually behind Halloween? The festival originally comes from the ancient Celtic harvest celebrations, especially Samhain, which was celebrated on November 1st. This time was of great importance to the Druids as they believed that the souls of the deceased could visit the living on this day. Bonfires were a popular custom to protect oneself from evil spirits. These aspects have been preserved in modern Halloween, a celebration that many people now know in its colorful form. About a quarter of annual candy sales in the United States occur during this time, showing how popular the holiday has become.

However, because of the origins of Halloween, people often question whether this holiday is appropriate for Christians. While the Bible does not directly mention Halloween, it does contain principles that are helpful in determining the purpose of the celebration. Some people believe that the dark roots and practices, such as witchcraft, celebrated on Halloween should be viewed critically. The Bible encourages thinking about things that are good and praiseworthy, a reflection that many are doing at this time.

Whether you slip into a creative costume, collect the candy or simply watch the hustle and bustle, the Halloween weekend in Göttingen and the surrounding area has a lot in store. Let yourself be infected by the spooky atmosphere!
