Garbage chaos in the Göttingen district: Citizens demand quick solutions!

In the Göttingen district there is a lot of trouble when it comes to waste disposal. For some time now, waste collection has been disrupted, and residents are suffering the consequences. In Ludolfshausen in particular, citizens complain about overflowing trash cans and torn trash bags, which condemn the landscape to pollution. HNA reports, that the head of the environmental department, Doreen Questionl, is visibly dissatisfied with the situation, and emphasizes that citizens have a right to reliable collection.

The company FKI, which took over waste disposal in the district six months ago, seems to be overwhelmed by the task. Planned reliability and timeliness are a long way off. There were disruptions in the removal of residual, organic and waste paper as well as in the yellow bins, and bulky waste also often remains. A lack of staff was also identified as the main cause, which led to the unsustainable conditions. NDR adds that plastic waste was last picked up in Klein Lengden six weeks ago.

Waste disposal problems

As the residents report, they have called the FKI again and again, but the excuses about a lack of staff and a lack of vehicles are now suffering. Residents are concerned about the hygiene of their surroundings and even fear a rat infestation. To counteract this, contractual penalties were imposed on FKI. This happened because FKI not only did not fulfill its promises in Ludolfshausen, but problems also occurred in the rest of the district. In particular, the yellow bins have not been provided everywhere on time, and many citizens have to place their remaining bins on cycle paths to create space for waste collection.

The managing directors of FKI have nevertheless assured that they want to resolve the disruptions by the end of August. Investments in additional personnel and vehicles are planned, and the district administration is also willing to cooperate to improve the situation. Unfortunately, there is currently a lack of reliable catch-up dates, which doesn't make communication any easier.

The path to better waste management

However, waste management is more than just regular trash pickup. According to a modular system laid down in the Circular Economy Act, solutions for waste prevention and recycling could also contribute to climate protection. A survey according to the Guide for municipal climate protection shows that waste management can start at different levels of action. These include swap meets, reusable systems and information on how to separate waste correctly. In the long term, the district could not only reduce the mountains of waste, but also become more environmentally friendly.

The current situation is a call to action. Both residents and the community are required. Can common solutions be found to get waste disposal under control? A good knack for working together could be a key to success.
