Something is happening at the Stauffenbergring in Göttingen! Construction work on the renovation and redesign of the playground there began in August 2023. There is great anticipation for the reopening at the end of October 2023, because the old play equipment, including swings, horizontal bars and climbing equipment with a slide, have been around for over 25 years and can be replaced by modern facilities. The work is ambitious: to make space for the new play equipment, wild trees are being removed, creating two play levels. The playground will also receive a new double swing. With a budget of around 50,000 euros for the procurement and installation of the equipment, the city of Göttingen shows how important it is to improve play opportunities for children. Assembly of the new play equipment is scheduled for mid-September 2023.
Involvement of residents and sustainable planning
What is particularly noteworthy is the inclusion of children, parents and accompanying persons in the planning process. In a two-stage process, residents were actively involved in the selection of the new play equipment. A first online survey in autumn 2024 was used to record gaming needs, followed by a second survey in spring 2025, in which citizens could choose the combinations of gaming equipment.
However, the construction work comes with restrictions: the playground unfortunately remains unusable during the entire construction period and the subsequent drying time of around six weeks. However, an alternative is the nearby municipal playground on Konrad-Adenauer-Straße, which can be reached in about five minutes on foot.
