New playground in Geismar: slide tower and more fun for children!
There is great joy in the Geismar district of Göttingen: after just two months of renovation work, the playground on Grete-Henry-Straße was reopened. The city administration has now officially given its approval and is looking forward to offering more entertainment for little adventurers with the new play equipment. Göttingen daily newspaper reports that a new, six meter high slide tower has been installed as the central highlight of the playground.
A new play area has been set up especially for the little ones. The planners made sure that tried and tested elements such as the swing and the sandpit were retained. In addition, the ground around the slide tower and other play equipment was covered with wood chips. This measure is intended to increase the safety of children and ensure a safe playing environment.
Renovation costs and changes
The total costs of the renovation amount to around 85,000 euros. However, some older facilities also had to be removed during the work, including an old play bus and several sand play equipment. The redesign now offers a sensible mix of renewal and preservation of the familiar.
As part of the ongoing efforts to design playgrounds in Göttingen, the playground at Stauffenbergring is also on the radar. Extensive renovations are being planned here, with old devices being replaced and new ones being installed. After an initial online survey in autumn 2024, in which children and parents were involved, the suggestions will be incorporated into further planning. The second survey took place from the end of March to mid-April 2025 to determine the little users' favorite designs. Göttingen.de confirms that a renovation is expected in 2025, the cost of which is around 60,000 euros.
Safety and quality in playgrounds
In connection with the design of playgrounds, the issue of safety should not be underestimated. A current discussion highlights the norms that serve to enable children to take age-appropriate risks and diverse experiences. Experts like Franz Danner from TÜV Süd emphasize that standards should only regulate uncontrollable dangers without restricting the creativity of playgrounds. Playground calculator highlights that the discussion around over-standardization can lead to “over-protection,” which could limit the creative play value of devices.
However, the goal remains clear: child safety and a playful environment must go hand in hand. A well-thought-out concept could combine safety requirements with creative play options so that little explorers can continue to have a lot of fun and enjoyment on the pitches in the future. Göttingen shows that good hands are being used here.
