Cologne's cinema landscape is becoming more colorful! From November 2025, the innovative HDR by Barco format will be introduced at selected Cineplex locations and the Cinedom Cologne. This is a big step not only for cinemas in Germany, but also for all film enthusiasts who are looking for a new experience. Loud Variety The Cinedom Cologne is one of the largest cinemas in the country and will present the new “CinedomX” experience, a new premium cinema concept that stands for high-quality film screenings.
Gerwin Damberg, EVP of Barco Cinema, is proud of the partnership with Cineplex and Cinedom and emphasizes the importance of this expansion in the European cinema market. “It is the right time to introduce our HDR format in cinemas,” says Damberg. With the new technology, cinemas can not only upgrade for Easter or Christmas films, but also appeal to a wider audience.
What is HDR?
But what makes HDR so special? High dynamic range television (HDR) significantly improves the quality of the signal displayed compared to standard dynamic range (SDR). It creates brighter highlights, darker shadows and more intense colors. The technology works in conjunction with Wide Color Gamut (WCG) technology, allowing filmmakers to present their works as vividly as possible. HDR by Barco takes image quality to a new level by improving image representation beyond traditional projections. So far, the HDR format has been introduced at the Cineplex locations in Münster, Paderborn and Goslar, with Cineplex Münster being the first cinema in the world to have two HDR by Barco-capable screens. Cinema experiences of the future
The first wave of HDR films released in this format includes exciting titles such as Superman, F1 and 28 Years Later. Fans can particularly look forward to the release of “Wicked: For Good” on November 21, 2025, as they can expect an incomparable cinema experience. Barco has big plans: The HDR by Barco format is also to be established in over 30 additional cinemas in the USA by the end of the year, including Regal Cinemas and Alamo Drafthouse Forbes.
