Discover Goslar's forgotten stories: Participation activity in the archive!

In the heart of Goslar, the city archive invites you to an exciting hands-on activity. On Wednesday, November 12, 2025, from 3:30 p.m., those interested can discover forgotten stories together at the Kulturmarktplatz (KUMA), Am Museumsufer 2. Historical photographs are viewed in a relaxed atmosphere, often hiding unknown stories. The variety of motifs depicted ranges from striking buildings to changing streets to mysterious faces from times gone by.

The aim of the event is clear: citizens are invited to research the background to these recordings and to reconstruct the city's collective memory. The city archives have an impressive collection that not only shows old streets and historic buildings, but also captures numerous everyday scenes. These visual witnesses are part of a larger story that needs to be brought to light again.

Collective memory and its meaning

Collective memory plays a central role in the connection between the past and the present. It's not just about simple remembering, but about constructing a shared identity. As the Federal Agency for Civic Education describes, collective memory is based on symbolic signs that are passed on across generations. Institutions like the city archives help ensure that these memories are not forgotten.

The theory of collective memory shows that memories are often selective and shaped by certain narratives. While some aspects of the story are highlighted, others are forgotten in favor of a positive self-image. This dynamic is not only limited to national memories but is also reflected in local contexts.

The hands-on activity in Goslar is not only an opportunity for nostalgic retrospection, but also an opportunity to actively participate in shaping the city's collective memory.

Participation details

The event is accompanied by the Pro Stadtarchiv support association, which takes care of the physical well-being - coffee and tea are available. Participation is free but limited to 25 people. Therefore, timely registration is required by November 10, 2025. Registrations can be made by email stadtarchiv@goslar.de or by phone at 05321 / 704-588.

Be there when forgotten stories are rediscovered together in Goslar! An afternoon full of historical experiences and stimulating conversations awaits you at the Kulturmarktplatz. Everyone can contribute to enriching the collective memory of our city.
