Bad Pyrmont blocks high school offer for Aerzen – what now?
In Aerzen the high school is not flourishing – to put it succinctly. The community's students have to rely on outside help in Hameln or Bad Pyrmont for their high school education. The Bad Pyrmont city council has decided that Aerzen should not receive a high school offer. This decision follows the recommendation of the city administration and poses challenges for the educational landscape in the region.
At the city council meeting, 22 votes voted to reject the Aerzen plan. Only four members refrained from voting, while Ute Michel and Jutta Ostermann (Greens) objected to the unanimous vote. Ostermann argued that a high school offering in Aerzen could help students be better prepared for high school. On the other hand, Bad Pyrmont politicians agreed that such an offer could endanger the number of students at the Humboldt-Gymnasium - at the moment 20 Aerzen students attend this high school, which makes up 8 percent of all foreign students. Anja Grages (CDU) emphasized that the Humboldt-Gymnasium is also an important location factor for Bad Pyrmont that should not be risked carelessly.
The situation at the Humboldt-Gymnasium
The Humboldt-Gymnasium itself remains a cherry in regional politics. There, 14 students in grades 8 to 10 were recently successfully certified as “junior coaches”. This training, which took place in collaboration with the NFV, included both theoretical and practical modules of being a trainer. What was remarkable was that this year, for the first time, no female students took part in the training, which made the group an all-male group. At this point, thanks go to the city and FC Pyrmont-Hagen for using the facilities, which enabled the aspiring coaches to exchange ideas and learn from each other.
The Humboldt-Gymnasium has earned a clear place in the region's educational landscape. The fact that there has been an increase in sports initiatives in recent years, such as the Herderschule soccer club and the school soccer players in grades 5 to 7, shows the efforts to offer students a variety of educational opportunities.
A look at the education system
In the context of these developments, the politically desired concentration of school locations is viewed just as critically as the challenges that schools face in the face of population shifts and different educational demands. What has currently been decided by the Bad Pyrmont city council could have long-term effects on the educational goals in the region.
The need for flexible and adapted educational offerings is higher than ever. We can only hope that those responsible will take this into account more in the future.
