Hanover celebrates the opening: the largest maternity hospital in Northern Germany!
Today, October 2, 2025, the new “Henrike” mother-child center in Hanover officially began regular operations. This means that Northern Germany's largest maternity clinic is finally becoming active for expectant parents. Around 4,500 births per year should be possible here without any problems. The investment costs for this impressive project amount to an impressive 100 million euros, with the state of Lower Saxony covering 80 percent of the costs, while the rest is borne by Diakovere and the children's hospital [ndr.de].
The mother-child center offers space for 67 mothers and their newborns and is equipped with nine delivery rooms. There are also a variety of family rooms that offer parents and their babies special comfort. These modern facilities are the result of a long planning and construction process, which was held up by some delays, as trial operation was originally scheduled for the summer of 2024.
Investment and support from the country
Health Minister Dr. Andreas Philippi recently presented a grant of 4 million euros from the hospital investment program 2024. This amount will go towards the new building of the mother-child center, which will enable the obstetric and neonatal clinics of the DIAKOVERE Henrietten and Friederiken Foundation to be brought together in a common building. Philippi made this clear during his visit to the children’s and youth hospital “Auf der Bult”. This funding will also enable the construction of a modern newborn ward that meets the latest standards. This particularly promotes the closeness between parents and baby. Those responsible for the project, including Stephen Struwe-Ramoth and Prof. Florian Guthmann, emphasized the importance of this financial support for planning security.
Support and numbers at a glance
A total of 32,207 clinical births were recorded in Lower Saxony last year. One reason for the great interest in the new clinic could also be the high quality of treatment. In the DIAKOVERE Henriettenstift, for example, a care quotient of 40.39 is given, which shows an excellent care ratio for births. This shows that this new center can keep up with the best clinics in the country, as news.de reports. In connection with the nationwide median of 50.38, there is still a higher burden on nursing staff in Lower Saxony.
The establishment of the “Henrike” mother-child center is not only an architectural success, but above all a step towards improved health care for mothers and newborns. After the press conference, which takes place parallel to the start of regular operations, a tour of the new premises will be offered in order to experience the new standard up close. The move of the clinics is expected to take several weeks, which should ensure seamless care for patients.
