Harburg's Lüneburger Straße: The return to the popular promenade!
Redesign of Lüneburger Straße in Harburg: Pedestrian zone is to be upgraded. Competition process starts in 2025.

Harburg's Lüneburger Straße: The return to the popular promenade!
Lüneburger Straße in Hamburg is facing comprehensive change. In recent years, this former promenade has developed from a thriving shopping street into a place that is heavily characterized by vacancies and one-euro shops. But the district office has recognized the need for action and is planning a redesign in order to significantly increase the quality of stay. How hamburg.de reports, Lüneburger Straße is not only a central connecting axis of Harburg's city center, but also important for foot traffic.
The design of the pedestrian zone is currently outdated and there is an urgent need for improvements. The redesign of Lüneburger Straße will become part of the networked urban development concept between Schlossinsel and Harburger Bahnhof. The goal: to create more inviting urban spaces and to develop a pedestrian zone that improves the connection between Rathausplatz and Lüneburger Straße. The district plans to lower some curbs and remove restricted parking spaces to ease the flow of pedestrians.
Invitation to participate
Citizens are invited to take part in this process. An information event will take place on November 27th at which the planned steps will be explained and opportunities for participation will be presented. This is an opportunity to provide direct feedback on the redesign and to actively shape the change harburg-aktuell.de reported.
A further step in this redesign is the open space planning competition, which will be announced in 2025. Ten teams from landscape architecture offices and engineering offices are invited to develop innovative design concepts. These concepts should not only take aesthetic aspects into account, but also offer answers to climatic challenges such as heavy rain, heat and drought.
Financing and outlook
The project is financed through funds from the Alliance for Walking and Cycling and the Integrated District Development framework program. The implementation will take place in several construction phases and is expected to be completed by 2028/29. During the redesign, emphasis should also be placed on preserving existing trees stadtundgruen.de, however, it may be necessary to remove some trees during the renovation.
Lüneburger Straße, once an artery for shopping and strolling, is being given a second chance to revitalize its character. The planning and the subsequent renovations offer the opportunity to make the city center more attractive and to respond to the needs of residents and visitors. So it remains exciting to see how the residents and the city will work together to create a place that invites you to linger and stroll.
