New life for the Harburg community center: 7.6 million for modernization!
An exciting upgrade for the community center is underway in Harburg! Dr. Andreas Dressel, the Finance Senator, recently pledged support for this important cultural center. A neighborhood investment fund is providing an impressive 550,000 euros to enable the furnishing and conversion of the former pub in the building. The modernization is being driven forward by GMH, the municipal implementer. This project is part of a larger initiative that aims to refresh the Harburg community center, which has existed for over 40 years, and make it fit for the future.
“The modernization is not just a building project, it is an important sign of cultural life in Harburg,” emphasizes Karen Pein, the Senator for Urban Development. As part of the RISE program, which is intended to promote lively neighborhoods and social cohesion, around 4.8 million euros will flow into modernization. These funds secure a significant part of the total financing of around 7.6 million euros.
Culture and community in focus
Christian Carstensen, Harburg district office manager, emphasizes the importance of the community center for the cultural life of the region. Jens Kerkhoff, Managing Director of GMH, speaks of a sustainable future through the use of energy-efficient technology. The modernization includes, among other things, the installation of a new ventilation system, modern LED technology and heat supply via district heating. The community center's former pub, whose operator recently resigned, is also being renovated. A multifunctional space will be created for events and workshops on healthy eating. This is particularly important because the Kultur Palast Foundation is taking over the premises and integrating them into the overall concept!
Dörte Inselmann, the director of the Kultur Palast Foundation, is pleased with the contemporary furnishings and the new usage options that the renovation has created. The plan is to resume operations in spring 2026, while the foundation's programs will continue in other locations until then.
The entire financing portfolio
The financing of the modernization measures comes from various sources:
- 4,8 Millionen Euro aus RISE
- 1 Million Euro von der Finanzbehörde
- 500.000 Euro aus Sanierungsfonds
- 500.000 Euro aus Klimaplanmitteln
- 400.000 Euro aus dem Quartiersfonds
- 400.000 Euro aus Gestaltungsmitteln der Bezirksversammlung
The modernization of the Harburg community center is more than just a construction project. It marks a further step towards contemporary cultural centers that meet the needs of today's society. Harburg shows that cultural life remains alive even in times of change. It will be exciting to see how the community center will develop in the coming months.
