Highway chaos: 20-year-old turns car because of nervous horse!

On Friday, October 10, 2025, there was an unusual traffic situation on the A27 between Verden and Walsrode. A 20-year-old turned her car with a horse trailer around in the middle of a traffic jam to calm her horse, which was becoming restless. How NDR According to reports, she drove on the shoulder for several kilometers until the police stopped her.

“I lost my nerve when I saw how restless my horse became,” explained the 20-year-old. She had already called 112 twice during the traffic jam and was advised to calm the animal down or contact a veterinarian. However, since the latter could not get to the motorway, she made the decision to turn the vehicle around, which later turned out to be legally problematic.

Horse safety on the road

The police pointed out that it was the driver's duty to calm her horse herself instead of driving against the direction of travel. This could now cost them dearly: a fine and a driving ban are in prospect. On the other hand, the Verden district confirmed the calls to the rescue control center and emphasized that safety should always be the top priority when transporting animals.

The police also make it clear that leaving the vehicle during a traffic jam is not allowed and asks all drivers to form an emergency lane. In this case, it would probably have been better to wait and see rather than risk creating a dangerous situation.

New regulations for horse transport

Pferd Aktuell verdeutlicht, müssen Wohnmobile über 7,5 Tonnen, die einen Anhänger ziehen, mit einem digitalen Fahrtenschreiber ausgestattet sein.

This records travel times, border crossings and locations when loading and unloading. Drivers must also adhere to the prescribed rest and driving times and use a driver card to document the use of the tachograph. Failure to comply can result in fines of up to 1,500 euros. For many small horse transporters, the technically permissible total mass is often at the limit, which can result in overloading.

In order to ensure the safety of these transports, a toll will also be introduced for trucks over 3.5 tons from July 1, 2024, which often receives little attention. Overloading can not only lead to fines, but also to liability issues if an accident ultimately occurs.

The introduction of these regulations aims to protect both animals and innocent road users. Responsible transport should therefore be in everyone’s interest.
