Train stands still for hours: 200 passengers trapped in the darkness!
On Saturday evening, October 26, 2025, around 200 travelers had to wait on a train on the Intercity line for several hours. The IC 2446 came to a standstill around 8:30 p.m. on the connection from Dresden to Hanover due to a technical defect. This situation resulted in passengers sitting in the dark for a time because the power on the train went out. At 11:40 p.m. a replacement train was finally made available for the passengers to transfer to. Sat1 Regional reports that Deutsche Bahn apologized for the inconvenience caused and thanked travelers for their patience.
What do travelers do in such an unpleasant situation? Deutsche Bahn has clear guidelines on how passengers can be compensated in such incidents. As explained on the railway's official website, passengers are entitled to a refund or compensation if their journey is affected due to delays or cancellations. You can send the relevant forms by post to DB Dialog GmbH or hand them in at a DB Travel Center if you would like to request a refund for your tickets. Information about passenger rights are available clearly and understandably.
Compensation for delays
The legal regulations stipulate that travelers are entitled to 25% of the fare in the event of delays of more than 60 minutes. If the delay is at least 120 minutes, the figure is even 50%. These regulations are intended to give passengers the feeling of not being left out in the cold.
- Verspätung von 60 Minuten: 25 % des Fahrpreises
- Verspätung von 120 Minuten: 50 % des Fahrpreises
It is particularly important to know that these compensations are not paid in the event of force majeure. However, under certain conditions, rail companies must also provide alternative transport and even free accommodation. An overview of passenger rights shows that there are also special regulations for season tickets.
In such situations, travelers should also find out about their entitlements in the event of delays and connections. Deutsche Bahn is obliged to provide information about its train connections and the associated rights so that no passenger is left in the dark. If there is an impending delay, rail companies are also required to offer free meals or refreshments.
