Hildesheim: Water back, but the boiling requirement remains in place!
The water supply in Hildesheim has stabilized again after the recent problems. All parts of the city have been connected to the network again since Sunday afternoon. This was announced by EVI Energy Supply Hildesheim. Nevertheless, a boiling water requirement remains in force after a pipe burst caused massive restrictions that have affected several households since last Monday.
The accidents began on Monday morning around 4:30 a.m. when a drinking water pipe suddenly burst. This incident resulted in the water supply being temporarily severely restricted in the districts of Einum, Itzum, Achtum, Uppen and Ochtersum. Originally 6,400 households were affected, but the situation was quickly improved through repairs and extensive measures. According to NDR, in some areas it was only possible to obtain water on a greatly reduced scale. Although supplies have now largely been restored, residents should boil their water for at least three minutes - this applies especially for drinking and hygienic use.
Drinking water collection points and support for households
So-called drinking water collection points were quickly set up for the affected districts. These can be found, among other things, in the sports hall in Achtum and at two locations in Itzum, where citizens can collect water in ten-liter buckets. Local fire departments are helping to staff collection points and it is recommended that you bring your own containers as supplies are limited.
In order to accommodate those affected, the city has also created regulations to reimburse the costs for washing machine users in a Hildesheim self-service laundromat. Receipts for a maximum of three wash cycles can be submitted to the Almstor customer center until September 30th, which will certainly help many residents who had to clean their laundry during the difficult time.
Cause and outlook
The cause of the pipe burst is still unclear. An expert is currently examining the damage, as the affected pipe needs to be replaced over a section of around 24 meters. The construction work, which began on Thursday after the problem was discovered, also has an impact on the infrastructure. Trees were felled and a bus stop was dismantled in order to carry out the necessary repairs. The street where the construction work is taking place remains closed for the time being.
In addition to the water problems, there have also been recent incidents in Bad Bevensen, where the water supply was also affected. But the situation there has now been stabilized again.
The incidents in Hildesheim are a striking example of how important reliable water infrastructure is. They are also part of larger discussions about the quality and safety of water supplies, which is of great importance not only for private households but also for industry. According to Statistikportal, data on water supply and quality is continuously collected in order to identify and eliminate possible dangers at an early stage.
Until the situation is fully clarified, the EVI's recommendation is: Please pay attention to current notifications and follow the boiling water regulations to protect yourself and your family.
