Eleven-year-old falls while boarding the S-Bahn - traffic interrupted!

An incident at Hamburg-Harburg train station caused a stir today: an eleven-year-old girl fell while boarding an S-Bahn. How sat1regional.de Reportedly, the accident happened in a crowd when the child fell into the gap between the train and the edge of the platform. Luckily, other passengers rushed to help and pulled the girl back onto the platform.

The girl suffered bruises and bruises in the fall and was immediately taken to hospital. Due to the incident, S-Bahn traffic had to be interrupted for around half an hour. Lines S3 and S5 were particularly affected, as they could not continue due to the closure.

Safety situation in road traffic

The incident highlights the general traffic and safety situation in Hamburg. According to the latest Road safety record reduced the number of people injured in road traffic in Hamburg by 5% to 8,874 in 2024, while the number of injured children even fell by an impressive 18.8% - from 446 to 362. The risk of being injured in a traffic accident is therefore historically low.

However, there are worrying developments: the number of fatal traffic accidents has risen to 39, compared to 28 last year. What is particularly dramatic is that more than half of these fatal accidents can be attributed to the behavior of the victims themselves. These figures were presented at a press conference on February 21, 2025 by Interior Senator Andy Grote and Police Chief Falk Schnabel, who also emphasized the importance of road safety work.

Additional challenges in the transport sector

Of particular concern is the increase in traffic accidents involving e-scooters, which rose by 7.3% to 780 accidents. Many of these accidents are caused by the riders themselves, which means that around 70% of e-scooter accidents can be attributed to misconduct. In contrast, however, a positive development can be observed: the number of accidents on the way to school fell by 21.8% to 93.

The city of Hamburg has also taken measures to increase safety, such as the traffic safety campaign “Hamburg is careful!”. This is intended to raise awareness of the dangers in road traffic and is particularly important for unprotected road users such as pedestrians and cyclists. In addition, turning assistance systems for heavy commercial vehicles have been mandatory since 2020 to prevent turning accidents.

Given current developments in the transport sector, it is more important than ever that all road users show consideration for one another. Because, as the tragedy at Hamburg-Harburg train station shows, even small inattention can have serious consequences.
