Lüneburg becomes a pioneer: Education for sustainability is firmly anchored!

The Lüneburg district is making progress in terms of education for sustainable development (ESD). After four successful years as a model municipality, the step towards independence is now being taken. On June 20, 2025, it was announced that the Lüneburg district will work independently as an ESD municipality, which means that sustainable education will be permanently anchored in the region. Loud Uelzen press The aim of ESD should be to enable not only children and young people, but also adults, to act sustainably.

An important part of this process is the networking of the actors in the educational region, which is supported by initiating joint projects. Among the numerous initiatives that were implemented during the model municipality between 2021 and 2025, the interactive traveling exhibition “Mission 2030 – Experience Global Goals” in the Lüneburg Museum stands out. An escape game on the 17 sustainability goals for secondary schools was also very well received. The seed ball machines, which were set up in cooperation with sustainable student companies to promote biodiversity, are particularly innovative.

Cooperation and networking

A strong network called “Sustainability Learning” was created to connect teachers, student representatives and students. This future-oriented education is supported by the Leuphana University of Lüneburg and Prof. Dr. Daniel Fischer, who act as partners in the implementation. The idea of these projects is based on the National Education Action Plan for Sustainable Development (NAP ESD), which was defined by the federal government. This background is also highlighted by the BMBF, which has been coordinating the UNESCO programs on ESD in Germany since 2015 and is continuously promoting the structural anchoring of ESD in all areas of education.

Dem ESD portal According to the National Action Plan, it includes 130 goals and 349 concrete recommendations for action. An impulse paper was adopted in the summer of 2023, which is intended to support faster implementation of the UNESCO “GNI 2030” program. The focus is on five priority areas of action in order to integrate ESD more effectively into Germany's educational landscape.

The path to sustainability

ESD not only offers education, but also an opportunity to actively participate in global challenges. Individual actions have far-reaching consequences that do not stop in the personal environment. Equal opportunities are discussed as well as quality of life in an increasingly complex world. In this sense, ESD is a sub-goal of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 4, which underlines the importance of high-quality education and defines ESD as central to the implementation of all 17 goals. This also promotes this approach Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Overall, the Lüneburg district is taking a big step forward by becoming one of 50 model municipalities in Germany to coordinate the “BNE Municipalities North-West” network, which also includes cities such as Kiel, Cologne and Münster. In the future, the aim is to further anchor ESD in educational institutions and administration and to develop new educational projects.
