New village shop in Wolbrechtshausen: Celebrate with us on August 23rd!
On August 23, 2025, the new village shop, the heart of the cultural life of this small town, will open in Wolbrechtshausen. Here the sponsoring cooperative “Ladentreff Alte Schule” will offer a very special shopping experience. Surrounded by regional delicacies and an inviting café, the opening promises to be a highlight for the entire community. Loud HNA The Wolbrechtshausen Music Association will provide musical support for the celebrations.
The offerings on opening day are varied: visitors can take part in tours of the village shop and the café, while there is a play station for children. For adults there are attractive opening offers as well as an exhibition entitled “Hidden beauties of the villages of Hevensen and Wolbrechtshausen”, where the prizes from the competition of the same name will be awarded.
Regionality is very important
In the new village shop, the first shelves are already stocked with non-perishable goods. Edeka has been won as an important supplier and a total of around 50 regional suppliers will present their products. “The idea behind the village shop is to strengthen the local economy and offer people a sustainable shopping alternative,” explains the cooperative in its concept. The cake in the café is also freshly baked in our own kitchen on site.
The financing for the new building amounted to 410,000 euros and was supported by the Braunschweig Office for Regional Rural Development. Originally, the municipalities of Wolbrechtshausen and Hevensen each contributed 130,000 euros, but now they each have to raise 26,000 euros more due to price increases.
Village shops through the ages
The importance of village shops has increased in recent decades. How neuland21 reports, each village used to have its own shops, but today these have become rare. Demographic changes, such as migration and aging of the population, as well as the dominance of large retail chains, have meant that small shops close to customers often no longer exist. Nevertheless, the creation of our own shops remains an important step towards strengthening regional identity and supply.
The initiative to open a village shop goes beyond just the sales room. It acts as a social meeting place, promotes regional value creation and enables short distances, which protects the climate. These shops also help to maintain the attractiveness of rural areas.
Innovative approaches in the village shop
An example of innovative business models is the village shop box, which offers sustainable food around the clock. It shortens transport routes and bundles products from local manufacturers in a central location. Village shop box aims to make food production more attractive for small producers and to meet consumers' demands for high-quality food.
The combination of local shopping and a meeting place for the community makes the new village shop in Wolbrechtshausen an exciting project that is of great benefit to both the region and the people who live there. August 23, 2025 will not only be an opening day, but also a step towards a sustainable future for the village structure.
