Bike tour to the Moringen concentration camp memorial: learn and experience history!

On Saturday, June 21st, the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) invites you to a special bike tour with a historical perspective. The destination of this guided tour is the concentration camp memorial in Moringen, which commemorates the atrocities of National Socialism. The starting signal is at 11 a.m. at the Einbeck town hall, and the route leads through picturesque towns such as Lauenberg and Fredelsloh before the participants arrive in Moringen.

In Moringen, cyclists can look forward to an informative tour of the memorial, which is an important place of remembrance. After the tour, a visit to the city cemetery is planned, which also houses memorials to National Socialism. On the return journey via the Leine-Heide cycle path, the aim is to return to Einbeck around 5 p.m. This approximately 50 kilometer tour is free and does not require ADFC membership. However, those interested should register in advance, either by calling Eva Messerschmidt on 05562 9503133 or online at www.adfc-northeim.de.

Memorials: Preserving a piece of history

The Moringen Concentration Camp Memorial not only offers a place to reflect on the past, but also brings to life the stories associated with this place. On the site of the former Uckermark youth concentration camp, which was built during the Second World War, around 1,200 young girls and women were held captive under cruel conditions. Many of them did not survive the inhumane conditions. The memorial has now developed into a place of remembrance and education, where events and projects take place every year to prevent forgetting. Efforts to keep the memory of the victims alive have intensified in recent decades in order to honestly come to terms with the atrocities of the past. The Moringen memorial site names some of the initiatives that are committed to this goal.

Memorial work is not only a sign of respect for the victims, but also an important component of educational work. Many schools, such as the Nikolaus Lehner Vocational School in Dachau, use memorial visits to educate students about the past. But implementing these visits is often difficult – at least if they are not well prepared. Educators emphasize that a well-planned visit has significantly more impact than a short trip that is not connected to the lesson. This shows how essential it is to treat the topic in an age-appropriate manner and with a clear connection to your own world.

A bike ride in memory

This bike tour is not only a sporting activity, but also an opportunity to reflect and talk about the past. Initiatives like these are particularly important at a time when the role of the culture of remembrance is being discussed. The memorial visits are intended to promote engagement with history and also encourage future generations to work for a democratic and solidarity-based society.

The commitment of the organizers and the participation of people in such events is a sign that history is not forgotten. Every kilometer on this bike ride could contribute to a greater understanding of our past and help us promote peace and justice in the future.

For those who would like to take part in the bike tour, it is important to register quickly to secure a place - because this unique opportunity should not be missed!
