100 years of horticultural tradition: Bumann-Haverkamp is celebrating big in Dötlingen!

A very special anniversary is in sight in Dötlingen: The Bumann-Haverkamp horticultural company is celebrating a proud 100 years of family history. Maik Haverkamp, who has been running the business in the fourth generation since 2013, has initiated many changes during this time in order to keep the legacy of his great-grandfather Max Bumann alive. A successful mix of tradition and modern demands characterizes the company, which was founded in 1925 by a trained gardener and today offers a wide range of services.

The focus is on gardening and landscaping, maintenance work and grave care. “There’s something there,” says Maik Haverkamp about the responsible work. He is accompanied by his sister Jennifer, who takes care of the company's floral highlights. They not only sell flowers, but also organize weddings and manage the new Structural Works project. In 2022, another important area was added: funeral floristry, which she manages together with her mother Dörte Haverkamp.

A look into the future

The family business has continuously developed in recent years. In 2007 the offering was expanded to include gardening and landscaping. In 2019, the new company building finally stood on the foundations of the old nursery, a sign of progress and a promising future. The company currently employs ten people, and great value is placed on their good loyalty and cooperation. “We also have a good hand when selecting our teams,” says Maik Haverkamp, describing the family atmosphere in the company.

The upcoming 100th anniversary celebration on August 16th will be a special event with invited guests. Maik Haverkamp and his wife Rebecca, who works as a commercial employee in the company, are also happy about their newest family member: their daughter is only nine months old. In this way, the tradition of gardening is not only continued in this family, but is also given a breath of fresh air.

The industry at a glance

This shows that there is a certain interest in green professions, even if the number of companies is declining. Local companies such as Bumann-Haverkamp and the family business Tensmann in Oer-Erkenschwick focus on diversity in their offerings. In addition to horticulture and floristry, Tensmann also offers cemetery maintenance and garden construction, making it another important player in the region.

Despite the challenges of digitalization and market developments, the future still holds some surprises for the horticultural industry. The Bumann-Haverkamp tradition will certainly not be the last success story the region has to tell.
