Oldenburg on the way to becoming the third university hospital in Lower Saxony!

In Oldenburg we are working hard on the future of medicine! At a meeting on January 30th, the city council voted unanimously for the Oldenburg Clinic to be recognized as the third university hospital in Lower Saxony. This was stated by the representatives of the HCM magazine stated in a recent report. The decision is a decisive step in creating the basis for applying for the title “University Hospital” from the state of Lower Saxony.

The Oldenburg Clinic is not only a maximum provider with over 800 planned beds, but also an important location for highly specialized treatment. With new framework agreements, the collaboration between the University of Oldenburg and the clinic and other partner hospitals will be strengthened. “We want close institutional integration,” said those responsible. The newly revised statutes will be submitted to the council for a vote and define key responsibilities in research and teaching.

A great commitment to the future

The clinic has continued to develop since its founding in 2012, in close cooperation with the University of Oldenburg and the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. From the winter semester of 2026/27 onwards, 200 students will receive a place in the human medicine course every year. This means the clinic is ideally positioned to train the next generation of doctors. The wide range of medical specialties on offer here ensures that people of all ages and genders receive first-class care. Particularly in the children's hospital, premature babies with low birth weight receive more solid medical care.

Thanks to the extensive experience and in-depth knowledge of the nurses and doctors, patients not only benefit from innovative treatments, but also significantly from the medical progress that the experts' scientific work brings with them. In comparison, this shows University Hospital of the Ruhr University Bochum, the largest university hospital in Germany, shows how important such medical facilities are for care: Around 750,000 patients receive inpatient and outpatient care here every year.

A call for support

The city of Oldenburg appeals to the state of Lower Saxony to create the formal requirements as quickly as possible and to complete the process this year. This would be another important step towards the creation of the third university hospital in Lower Saxony, a project that would not only strengthen Oldenburg, but the entire region. In view of the strong medical network that also exists at other university hospitals such as the UK RUB can be found, Oldenburg hopes for timely progress.

The upcoming developments at the Oldenburg Clinic could soon lead to a new chapter in medical care and training. The anticipation of a future-oriented collaboration with the university and the cooperation partners is palpable and gives hope for a positive development!
