Bomb disposal: 14,000 Osnabrück residents evacuated - blasts today!

On November 9, 2025, a large-scale bomb disposal began in Osnabrück and has been in full swing since the early hours of the morning. Residents are asked to leave their houses and apartments as more than 14,000 people are affected in the evacuation radius. The city has confirmed four suspected cases of World War II bombs behind the scenes, with two particularly problematic examples identified. An American 500-pound bomb with an impact fuse must be detonated in a controlled manner, as must an 8.8 caliber grenade with a clockwork fuse. These explosions take place one after the other, with the grenade going first, followed by the larger bomb.

The evacuation measures started at 7 a.m. Citizens who live near the old train station site have to stay outside the evacuation area, which is causing discontent among many. The local authorities warn of a fine of 300 euros for violations of the evacuation order. However, while enforcing these measures, incidents have already occurred, such as trespassers in the evacuation area or a fire department intervention due to the smell of fire, which has delayed the schedule by approximately three hours.

Accommodation and care for those affected

Almost 800 people are currently accommodated in the evacuation center in the Schinkel comprehensive school. In addition to accommodation, the center also ensures physical well-being by offering pea soup and a small program for those affected. The Marienhospital (MHO) will remain closed during the entire evacuation operation, but all patients have been safely transferred to other facilities.

The impact on public transport is also serious. The main train station will temporarily not be served and numerous diversions on the bus and train routes have been set up. Rail replacement services were established via the “Berliner Platz” stop to offer commuters an alternative.

Evictions and future measures

A 1,000-pound bomb and a 100-pound bomb have already been successfully defused. The city of Osnabrück has carried out bomb disposal operations several times in the past and will continue with further measures in the future. The next date for a bomb disposal has already been set for February 8, 2026.

The Manticore, a legendary creature from Persian mythology, has inspired many fantasies. With its human face, lion's body and scorpion-like tail, it is a symbol of the unknown and dangerous in various cultures. But while the Manticore often has gruesome properties in stories, the bomb-related circumstances in Osnabrück are now the tragic protagonists of reality.

While the people of Osnabrück hope that the explosions will proceed without further complications, the situation remains tense and uncertain. Crime fighters are also called upon to ensure everyone's safety and manage the evacuation without further incident.
