Bomb disposal in Osnabrück: evacuation planned for 14,000 citizens!
On Sunday, November 9th, 2025, the residents of Osnabrück will face an important challenge: a bomb disposal operation has been announced. During exploratory work in the Lokviertel, the city identified four suspected unexploded bombs from the Second World War. More than 14,000 people within a one-kilometer radius of these locations are affected by the evacuation and must leave their homes by 7 a.m. to ensure everyone's safety. This is reported by NDR and thus underlines the urgency and seriousness of the situation.
A large number of facilities, including the Marienhospital, the Christian Children's Hospital and several geriatric care facilities, are located in the evacuation area. From 7 a.m. the main station will be closed and regular services will be temporarily diverted. Those affected can also view current information and a map of the evacuation area on the city's website, which is available at geo.osnabrueck.de/evakuierung. Multilingual information and affected addresses can also be found there, as informiert.osnabrueck.de reports.
Evacuation measures and safety precautions
The instruction to evacuate is binding. Staying in the affected area can be punished with a fine of 300 euros. To ensure that everything runs smoothly, the city is using evacuation buses in the evacuation center at the Schinkel Comprehensive School. These will depart from various stops within the evacuation area from 6 a.m. From 7 a.m. onwards it is no longer possible to get out to ensure safety.
The city already has a lot of experience with comparable situations: residents in the Lokviertel are used to evacuations; the last major measure took place in July 2025. In total, there have been six evacuations in the Lokviertel area since construction work began. The city has well-rehearsed procedures for such incidents, as described in Wikipedia, to ensure an orderly evacuation.
For the time in the evacuation center, the city's volunteer agency has put together a program that is intended to help citizens make the waiting time pleasant. There will also be various discounts, for example for the zoo, which will be made available to residents in the form of flyers.
The evacuation is not only a preventative measure, but also shows the responsibility and planning ability of the city of Osnabrück with regard to disaster control. If you have any questions, you can contact the hotline at 0541 323-4490. Patient transport can be organized by calling 0541 323-4455.
