Marquez wins in a thrilling sprint – Alex Marquez close!

The excitement was palpable at the MotoGP Grand Prix in Assen last weekend. Alex Marquez, who was driving for the BK8 Gresini Racing team on his Ducati GP24, secured second place in the sprint race and thus ensured a meeting between the two generations of brothers. Marc Marquez from the Ducati Lenovo Team won the Tissot Sprint, his ninth sprint of the season, just 0.351 seconds ahead of his brother Alex. This close decision made the race particularly exciting.

Both brothers were close together from the first lap. Marc Marquez overtook Fabio Quartararo, who had started from pole position, in the GT Chicane and took the lead early on. Alex quickly followed his big brother and grabbed Quartararo as well. However, during the race Alex noticed that Marc was having problems in the third sector. “I was faster there, but I just couldn't overtake,” said Alex Marquez, expressing his frustration at the missed overtaking opportunity. Despite this disappointment, he was quite happy with the performance of his bike and his own speed. “We have collected valuable information for Sunday’s race,” he added.

Race course and results

The sprint race was characterized by exciting overtaking maneuvers and an exciting pace. Fabio Quartararo crashed in the tenth corner after setting his fastest lap, shaking up the race again. Aprilia Racing's Marco Bezzecchi rounded out the podium in third. On the last lap, the brothers gave each other a hard time, with Bezzecchi 0.7 seconds behind the leaders and recognizing the opportunity to still influence the race, but in vain. The placings of the first drivers were:

Place driver team
1 Marc Marquez Ducati Lenovo team
2 Alex Marquez BK8 Gresini Racing
3 Marco Bezzecchi Aprilia Racing
4 Di Giannantonio Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team
5 Francesco Bagnaia Ducati Lenovo team
6 Maverick Vinales Red Bull KTM Tech3

Conclusion and outlook

Marc Marquez sent a clear signal with his victory and further reduced his gap in the overall standings, making him one of the main favorites for the next races. For Alex it is now a matter of transferring the knowledge gained from the sprint into the race on Sunday and perhaps making his first attempt at victory in the Grand Prix clear. “I will do everything I can to build on the result and not fall behind my brother this time,” he promised.

The 2025 MotoGP season remains exciting, and the next challenge is already planned for Sunday. Will Alex manage to put his brother in his place? Fans can look forward to finding out.
