Discover the secrets of the castles in the Salzgitter area!
Today's tour through the history of the Salzgitter area was all about castles and palaces. The prince's hall of the castle was the venue for an interesting conference that dealt with the late Middle Ages from around 1250 to 1550. More than 80 interested people came together to delve deeply into the topic. This exciting cooperation event was organized by the Municipal Museum Schloss Salder and the Lower Saxony regional group of the German Castle Association, and offered a multi-faceted look at the heyday of the noble castle and the change from castle to castle. In addition, one could experience the special features of the castles in the city area.
Lectures by renowned speakers enabled visitors to discover exciting aspects of history. Dr. In his lecture “New castles, new functions, new lords, new forms” Heiko Laß highlighted the changes in castle construction and their use. Dr. Nadine Mai focused on the manor in the Duchy of Braunschweig and Lüneburg, while Dr. Christian Ottersbach conveyed a picture of aristocratic castle building between the 15th and early 17th centuries. Dr. also provided information about noble families in the late Middle Ages and their early work in the Salzgitter area. Gudrun Pischke and Arne Homann introduced small castles and large farms in the region. Christoph Lücke's lecture on the decline and destruction of Lichtenberg Castle rounded off the program.
The cultural heritage of the region
The castles and palaces around Salzgitter are not only cultural landmarks, but also popular excursion destinations. They attract hikers and families for day trips who are curious to explore the stories and secrets of the architecture. Some castles are privately owned and are only visible from the outside, while others are open to visitors. Unfortunately, not all historical buildings have been preserved in their original condition; many suffered as a result of war and neglect. But there are also lavishly restored castles, and even the ruins speak of times gone by and are a romantic destination for discovery tours.
The event team, consisting of committed employees and volunteers from the Lichtenberg Castle Association, did an excellent job and ensured an all-round successful afternoon. This conference not only marked a look back, but also the call for the next meeting on October 24, 2026, which will be dedicated to the changes in aristocratic society and architecture in modern times.
For all those who are interested in this fascinating historical narrative, pre-registration for the next conference is possible by calling 05341 / 839-4619 or 05341 / 839-4630, or via email.
