Power outage in Salzgitter: Rewe is fighting against cooling chaos!
On Friday, October 17th, the people of Salzgitter faced an unexpected challenge: a sudden one Power failureshut down the city's entire power grid. In the well-known Rewe branch on Chemnitzer Straße, the reaction was quick and decisive. The consequences were clearly noticeable: refrigerated shelves had to be cleared and all refrigerated goods had to be removed from the range. It was similar in another branch on Ludwig-Erhard-Straße.
The safety of customers was the top priority here. Employees were required to move a large portion of the goods to other refrigerated units in order to save the perishable food. Unfortunately, not all products could be saved; some had to be disposed of due to damage to the refrigerator cabinets. As a Rewe company spokesman confirmed, the assessment of disposal is crucial, with the focus being on the permissible cooling and freezing temperatures.
The impact on the food supply
One like that Power failurehas far-reaching consequences, especially for the food supply in Germany. If there is no electricity available, this quickly becomes a problem for many supermarkets. Many products require urgent cooling, which can lead to enormous waste during extended outages. Studies show that almost two thirds of Germans already prefer to pay by card when shopping, which represents another conflict scenario in a blackout.
The situation in Finland offers interesting perspectives: they have reacted innovatively and developed crisis-proof supermarkets. The S-Market in Konala, Helsinki, for example, has a separate power supply that kicks in immediately in the event of a failure. This means that cooling is maintained even during a power outage. Such concepts could also become important in Germany – for example in the Rewe branches.
Prepare for an emergency
But how good are we in this country at a large-scale, long-lasting one Power failureprepared? The connection between critical infrastructure and the high dependency on a stable power supply has become increasingly clear in recent years. An infrastructure failure could severely impact not only food supplies, but also communications and healthcare.
The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief has developed guidelines for emergency power supply in order to be prepared in such emergencies. Individual expenses, such as emergency power generators in the logistics centers of large discounters, already show the direction in which things are going. The goal is clear: to control crisis scenarios as best as possible and to create fallback levels to maintain all important services.
In everyday life, citizens are also required to prepare for possible power outages and know how to react in an emergency. Awareness of these issues must be raised - because electrical energy supply is a central part of our lives.
