Alcohol-related accident in Rinteln: 62-year-old gets his driver's license back!

On July 16, 2025, a casual but serious incident occurred for a 62-year-old from Rinteln who collided with a cyclist at the “Lidl roundabout” in Rinteln. The incident, which occurred back in June 2024, is the focus of a court case that recently ended.

The driver, who was driving a van, had a blood alcohol content of 0.8 per mille at the time of the accident. This number exceeded the threshold for relative inability to drive, which starts at 0.3 per mille, but was still below the threshold for absolute inability to drive of 1.1 per mille. The cyclist, who illegally crossed the zebra crossing, fell after the collision and suffered a swollen leg. It is worth noting that when the accident was recorded, the police also documented performance deficits such as inattention and impaired time perception on the part of the driver, which, according to a forensic doctor, could indicate the influence of alcohol.

Procedure and judgment

The road traffic endangerment case was dropped after a four-hour hearing. The defendant had to pay 500 euros to the German traffic police, but got his driver's license back after seven months. This had previously been confiscated by the police and then temporarily withdrawn. This shows that the decisions of the Bückeburg district court and the Rinteln district court were different with regard to driving licenses, which caused additional confusion.

Loud Kämpf law firm An alcohol content of over 0.3 per mille can result in serious legal consequences in the areas of driving license revocation and criminal proceedings. Such incidents are not only legally complicated, but can also massively restrict the personal freedom of those affected.

Drunk driving: a permanent danger

Accidents like this shine a light on the dangers of driving under the influence. Even if the driver in this case was not over the absolute limit, the danger to other road users in such situations is still enormous. Every second driving license holder in Germany is not aware that even a low alcohol level can lead to legal difficulties.

The case puts the issue in the spotlight and reminds people in Rinteln and beyond to take responsibility in road traffic seriously. Because a small sip can quickly lead to big problems.
