Old clothing containers in the Stade district: Where should the clothes go now?

The inconspicuous old clothing containers in the Stade district will soon be a thing of the past. The German Red Cross (DRK) has announced that it will dismantle all containers by the end of November, leaving many citizens unsettled. What happens now to the old clothes that should so often find a new home? kreiszeitung-wochenblatt.de reports that there were over 340 used clothing containers in the district before the DRK withdrew. After that, only about 250 will remain, which will be provided by the district administration at waste management centers and recycling centers.

The sudden change is linked to a new EU regulation on the disposal of used textiles, which had already caused slight unrest at the beginning of the year. Hopes for consistent recycling were dampened by the high disposal costs that arose due to the quality of the clothing collected. Around 40% of the old clothes collected in the DRK containers could not be recycled, which further complicated the situation.

What to do with the old clothes?

The Stade district administration informs citizens that broken and dirty clothing belongs in the household waste. However, there are alternatives for items of clothing that are in good condition: the DRK clothing stores and DRK shops accept donations. Visitors can drop off their clothes there, and the clothing will be sorted and processed before it goes back into circulation. In addition, Stade residents can also use the second-hand boutique “allerhand” in Stade.

But are there more options? Definitely! Online classifieds, swap meets and flea markets are also good places to give old clothes a new life. Heavily worn textiles should also be disposed of in the residual waste bin in order to protect the environment. It is important that citizens do not forget: Every German buys around 12 kg of new clothing every year. Time to ditch something old and do something good!

Helpful information for donors

The DRK emphasizes that donors cannot bring in mattresses or furniture, but private items of old clothing are welcome. Incidentally, the unwearable textiles are used to create products such as doormats or cleaning rags that are recycled. The proceeds from these clothing donations support important projects, including youth work and the DRK's voluntary initiatives. A search function on the DRK website helps you find the nearest district association, which makes the delivery easier.

In the Stade district there is enough space for well-preserved donations, despite the DRK's withdrawal from used clothing containers. Citizens are required to be creative and responsible with their clothes so as not to put additional strain on the environment.
