Ukrainian children find peace: Stade district offers a break from war

In the Stade district, 30 Ukrainian children are currently being given a welcome break from the horror of war. This initiative, which began on September 26, 2025, allows children from the Mykolaiv region, which is suffering from the ongoing Russian attacks, to spend a few relaxing days in Germany. The children, aged between 8 and 15, will stay in Stade until Sunday, accompanied by their mothers, who will support them during this difficult time. NDR reports that the stay is peppered with various active program items. This includes trips to a wildlife park and an orchard where the children can drive tractors, pick apples and bake cakes together.

An important part of the events is the commemoration of the victims of the war, which the little guests celebrate together every morning. The initiative is supported by local associations, the German Red Cross and the Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Stade Chamber of Crafts, which organizes local accommodation for the children.

Collaboration and support

As the Stade district reports, this stay is the first action of its kind in the region with the aim of giving Ukrainian children and their families a little light in the shadow of war. To date, there has been no comparable offer in Lower Saxony. However, the support for Ukrainian refugees is comprehensive: around 5,000 displaced people live in the Stade district, and according to an appeal for donations, several hundred thousand euros have already been provided for relief supplies to fire departments, rescue services, hospitals and children's homes. Stade district has called for further donations for the Ukrainian delegation's excursions and activities. Two accounts have been set up to which anyone can donate.

The Dutch authorities appreciate the importance of these support actions, especially since Lower Saxony is a partner region of Mykolaiv, where the war left severe scars. Consul General Dr. Iryna Tybinka initiated the idea of giving children a break to meet not only their physical but also emotional needs.

Integration of refugee Ukrainians

In order to offer refugees in Germany a perspective, the federal government has set the course for better integration. Around 1.14 million Ukrainian refugees currently live here, 30 percent of whom are children and young people under the age of 18. Federal government reports on the great commitment of volunteers who actively help with integration. As part of educational measures, around 218,000 Ukrainian children and young people now attend schools in Germany.

These supportive measures are not only important for the children, but for the entire Ukrainian community that is looking for a new home in Germany. Further support campaigns pave the way so that refugees can not only leave the war behind them, but also find a place in society again.
