From insider tip to U20 star: Justin Bourgault's rise at Brest!

17-year-old Justin Bourgault has had an impressive career over the last two years, taking him from the minor leagues to the U20 World Cup in Chile. As a regular in the Stade Briochin's five-man defense, he achieved impressive performances, particularly in the 2-1 win against TA Rennes, where his team was able to leave last place in Group E.

The young left-back is originally from Saint-Brieuc and played for both ES HDB Emeraude and Lamballe FC in his youth before moving to Stade Briochin in 2020. From there, he made leaps and bounds in the 2022-2023 season, playing 29 times for the second team and 23 times for the first team in the National 2. After a move to US Concarneau, where he established himself as the newest regular in the National, Bourgault moved to Stade Brestois in January 2025.

Bourgault's path to the World Cup

Bourgault already has the chance to prove himself internationally in the U20 national team. In the current World Cup he impressed as a regular player in the first two group games and in the knockout rounds against Japan (1-0) and Norway (2-1). Bourgault dreams of returning from Chile with a trophy to increase his chances of playing at Brest. After a pubalgia-related setback that delayed his return to the field, he is motivated to show what he's made of at the highest level.

“We really miss a good baguette,” says Bourgault, who is surprised by the cultural differences in Chile and has to adapt to the new environment while recognizing the chance to demonstrate his skills in a larger arena. He sees himself as the product of an atypical career without the usual youth academy and emphasizes how important the experience against the seniors is for his career.

A promising player in the spotlight

The coaches, including Guillaume Allanou, praise Bourgault's rapid and extraordinary rise, which earned him the trust of those in charge in Ligue 1. Interestingly, Bourgault has only played four games for Brest, one of which came this season, but his potential shows that he can achieve much more.

Next Wednesday, the young player could find himself in the spotlight again when he meets Morocco in the final of the U20 World Cup. The whole of football France is looking forward to the clash and Bourgault is ready to recommend himself for a bright future in the football world.
