Before you travel: Take important information about medication with you!
Summertime is travel time, and for many people medication is part of everyday life. However, this can lead to difficulties when it comes to taking medication with you to other countries. For example, anyone who is dependent on narcotics should definitely inform themselves in advance. According to the [Landkreis Stade](https://www.landkreis-stade.de/portal/meldeen/medizine-mit-auf-reisen-kommen-darauf-muss-geachten- Werden-901008304-20350.html?rubrik=901000006), citizens who take medication that falls under the Narcotics Act need a medical certificate in order to be able to travel to Schengen countries.
This certificate must be certified by the responsible authority. The Stade District Health Office provides the necessary information about taking narcotics with you, but what is important is that certification can only be carried out for medical practices located in the Stade district. If the practice is located somewhere else, the responsible office at the doctor's place of residence is responsible for the certification.
Make travel preparations in good time
Another aspect that travelers should pay attention to is contacting the health office in a timely manner. In order to receive treatment on time, an appointment is required. In addition, the administration fee for the certification is relatively moderate at 14.50 euros, and payment can be made conveniently by EC card. The notarized certificate is valid for up to 30 days, an important point for anyone planning a longer trip.
Another important regulation according to the information from Bfarm states that patients are only allowed to carry their narcotics for their own needs and in an appropriate quantity. Third parties are not permitted to take medication with them. A certificate completed by a doctor is required for travel within the Schengen countries, and each certificate is valid for a maximum of 30 days.
Special features of substance addictions
For substitution patients, i.e. people who are taking methadone or buprenorphine, for example, doctors can also issue prescriptions for a maximum of 30 days. Here too, travelers should keep a close eye on the respective regulations in the destination country. The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs also points this out: In some countries it may be necessary to carry the original prescription with you in order to prove that the medication was legally procured.
When entering certain countries, additional regulations must be observed, such as the ban on medicines approved in Switzerland or the need for a special permit. If you do not have the opportunity to take the narcotics you need with you, you should inquire beforehand whether they are available in the country you are traveling to.
Finally, it is advisable to be well informed in advance and to obtain all the necessary documents. So nothing stands in the way of a relaxing trip!
