Beach chair auction in Norddeich: 60 buyers despite rain and bargains!
In Norddeich, Aurich district, a very special auction is attracting the attention of bargain hunters. On October 25, 2025, a total of 41 discarded beach chairs and 10 dog beach chairs were auctioned. The event took place for the seventh time in a row and despite the persistent rain, 60 participants turned up - significantly fewer than the 250 that the organizers, the Tourismus-Service Norden-Norddeich, had expected.
The beach chair auction is a popular event at the end of the season, when many beach chair operators retire their furniture after a long summer. The beach chairs that were made available for the auction had a minimum bid price of 50 euros. In the end, the highest bid achieved an impressive 310 euros. Particularly attractive models change hands for as little as 70 euros, reports ndr.de.
Models of beach chairs
Before the auction started, the beach chairs were thoroughly checked and cleaned in the beach maintenance department. A specially hired “beach chair doctor” was responsible for carrying out minor repairs in order to return the chairs to an attractive condition. However, it was important for the buyers to take care of the removal themselves. Many traveled by car and trailer to take their new piece of beach furniture with them.
Particularly noteworthy is the variety of beach chairs, which can fulfill different functions, for example as sauna furniture or even as a wheelchair-accessible version. A uniform green and white upholstery also makes the beach chairs recognizable as former beach furniture, transforming them into a charming piece of German coastal culture.
An event with tradition
Although the desire for a good bargain price was the initial driving force for the participants, the auction also has a certain nostalgic value. The beach chairs that are going under the hammer here not only represent summer vacations, but also many wonderful memories on the beach. Participants from North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse were ultimately able to take a small part of Norddeich home with them, even if only in the garden.
The nice feedback from visitors and the friendly interaction in the wet weather show that this tradition can be continued in the future. Maybe next time there will be many more who will be tempted by the delicacies by the water. Who knows which special models will find their way into the gardens of the new owners.
