EDP is planning a huge wind farm in Uelzen – 219 MW for the energy transition!

The wind is blowing strongly for the Portuguese energy group EDP: The company has acquired a massive area at an auction in Germany for the construction of a wind farm. How renewableenergies.de reports, the decision in favor of EDP was made in February at an auction by the wind project developer Caeli Wind. EDP has secured 2,700 hectares of land south of Uelzen, where a wind farm will be built by the end of this decade.

The plans stipulate that the Uelzen-Suderburg wind farm could become one of the largest onshore wind farms in Germany with an installed capacity of around 219 megawatts. The plan is to build up to 38 powerful wind turbines, each with a nominal output of 5.76 megawatts. Loud edp.com The wind farm is expected to deliver over 475 gigawatt hours of clean energy annually, which is equivalent to the electricity consumption of approximately 150,000 households and could avoid over 330,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

New plans for wind power in Lower Saxony

The region is open to renewable energies. EDP has already signed land lease agreements with the owners of the properties. There are already five older wind turbines in the area, each with a nominal output of 2 megawatts, as well as four WPD turbines with a nominal output of 5.5 megawatts. In addition, Getproject received approval for a project with 24 wind turbines in Suderburg in 2023.

Another important step forward is that local area planners are currently revising the Uelzen district's regional spatial planning plan. In Suderburg, new areas suitable for wind power are being sought, particularly in a large forest area. The decision on this should be made by the middle of the year - a sign that Lower Saxony is well on its way to implementing the legally required designation of areas for renewable energies in order to achieve the target of 2.2 percent of the state's area.

Renewable energy on the rise

The trend towards renewable energies is unmistakable. How bmwk.de shows, the final energy consumption for heat from renewable sources will have already reached 197 terawatt hours in 2024. This corresponds to a slight increase compared to the previous year. It is also predicted that renewable energies will continue to gain in importance and increasingly replace fossil energy sources.

With investments of 32 billion euros in 2024 and almost 406,000 people working in the renewable energy sector, this underlines the growing relevance of this area for the German economy. The EDP projects could therefore not only contribute to the energy supply of the future, but also act as a catalyst for the regional economy.
