A1 between Vechta and Cloppenburg: Bridge demolition causes complete closure!

Next weekend, the A1 motorway between Vechta and Cloppenburg will be a challenge for road users. The approximately 7 kilometer section has been completely closed in both directions since Friday evening until 5 a.m. Monday morning. The reason for the closure is construction work that includes the demolition of four bridges from the 1960s. These bridges no longer meet today's load-bearing requirements and have already been subject to weight restrictions, reports Picture.

The construction site is operated by a total of 60 workers and 16 excavators who work around the clock. In order to prevent falling parts, so-called fall beds made of sand are piled up under the bridges, explains NDR. The demolition work resulted in around 6,500 tonnes of construction rubble, which had to be transported away in around 270 truckloads.

Detour and further construction work

After the old bridges have been demolished, work on the new structures will begin immediately. Experts also expect another full closure in spring 2026 in order to install the new bridge parts. The federal motorway company is planning comprehensive renovations this year that will not only affect the A1, but also other important routes such as the A7, A23 and A261. However, the financing of these measures currently remains uncertain.
