Fürstenwalde: The train station area is turning into the dreaded no-go zone!

In Fürstenwalde, a charming town in Brandenburg, part of the population feels increasingly unsafe, especially in the area of the train station. According to residents' assessments and observations in the city, the situation has worsened since 2015, when many migrants came to the city. The train station, which was built in 1842 and is one of the oldest in Germany, is considered by many to be a no-go zone at night. Citizens report bullying groups and an increase in aggressiveness and littering in the area.

As the World reported, police operations at the train station increased from 197 in 2023 to 256 in 2024. Mayor Matthias Rudolph emphasizes that the perceived insecurity that many citizens experience is difficult to quantify. Despite this, police figures show there were over 28 robberies at the train station in 2024, followed by another 20 in 2024.

Security problems are increasing

An incident on August 2, 2025 shows the explosive situation: an 18-year-old German was brutally attacked by two young men. Luckily, the victim was able to quickly alert the police. It is significant that one of the attackers already has a history with the police. Such incidents are causing residents' feelings of safety to fluctuate, and the increase in physical injuries from 329 to 375 in the region further reinforces these concerns n-ag.de highlights.

Although the police have recorded a decline in robbery and property damage crimes, the depressed mood of the population cannot simply be assuaged by statistics. Christian Kromberg, Chairman of the German Forum for Urban Security, points out that the feeling of security also depends largely on the personal perception of citizens.

Urban development changes in sight

In view of the ongoing challenges, the city of Fürstenwalde is considering how it can improve the situation. Urban development changes are planned, including the construction of a new quarter on Eisenbahnstrasse and renovations to the train station, which are scheduled to begin in 2026. Mayor Rudolph is also considering the possibility of video surveillance, but is faced with staffing shortages when implementing it.

One local resident, Chris Gretzschel, describes the situation as a kind of “open gang war” between different groups, including Kosovar Albanians and Syrians. These developments certainly contribute to increased uncertainty. Many citizens are of the opinion that the train station and its surroundings urgently need a new face in order to become a place of well-being again.

It remains to be hoped for the affected citizens that the planned measures will lead to a noticeable improvement in the situation and that a feeling of security can return to the city.
