Zetterer about transfer rumors: My place is at Werder!

Today, July 12, 2025, Michael Zetterer, goalkeeper of SV Werder Bremen, celebrates his 30th birthday. For this occasion, the athlete is heading to Verden, where his first pre-season test match against upper division club FC Verden 04 is scheduled for next Saturday. The experienced keeper, who kept a clean sheet in ten Bundesliga games last season, will certainly play an important role.

The competition for the goalkeeper position at Werder Bremen is particularly exciting this year. Substitute Mio Backhaus is pushing for the starting eleven, but Zetterer makes it clear that he has no reason to worry about having to sit on the bench any time soon. In the interview, the Bavarian native said that coach Horst Steffen had clearly signaled to him that he was planned as number one. “Despite all the transfer rumors, I want to stay in Bremen and have a successful season,” said Zetterer. His teammates particularly value him as a pass-off point, which further underlines his value to the team.

Path to professional football

In his career, Michael Zetterer fought his way up from the small DJK Darching in Valley in Bavaria to Werder Bremen. At the age of eleven he moved to the youth department of SpVgg Unterhaching and played through all the youth teams there. He signed his first professional contract in 2012 and quickly established himself as a regular goalkeeper. In the 2014/15 season he was even the youngest goalkeeper in the third division. This talent did not go unnoticed and so Werder Bremen decided to invest in Zetterer and sign him for a transfer fee of 100,000 euros.

Although he initially acted as a second substitute goalkeeper, Zetterer was able to gain more playing time in 2015 and 2016 due to injuries to the other goalkeepers. His first Bundesliga appearance came on September 11, 2022, when he replaced the injured Jiří Pavlenka in a 1-0 defeat against FC Augsburg.

Career highlights

What is particularly impressive about Zetterer's career is his ambition and ability to assert himself. In the past season under new coach Horst Steffen, he was not only able to stabilize SV Werder Bremen's defense, but also demonstrate his own abilities as a playmaker, as the coach's playing philosophy suits him. “I can play well with my foot,” emphasizes Zetterer, emphasizing how important the support of his teammates is to him.

With Zetterer in goal, SV Werder Bremen not only has a reliable number one, but also a player who has continuously earned his place. The club's goalkeeper chronicle documents its developments and successes, and the future continues to promise exciting challenges. Michael Zetterer remains an eye-catcher in the Bundesliga and a key player for the Green-Whites. Will he be able to confirm his performances this season too? The fan community is definitely excited!
