50 years of BSG Brake: Sport for everyone – strength through community!

On July 15, 2025, the Disabled Sports Community (BSG) in Brake celebrated a very special anniversary: 50 years of community, sport and inclusion. The celebrations took place at “Kiek mol rin” in Sürwürden and highlighted the remarkable development and numerous successes of the club. Founded 50 years ago, the BSG has developed from a small group of committed people into an important part of the regional sports landscape.

The founding members include personalities such as Manfred Herla, Otto Fröhlich and Georg Hanke, who laid the foundation for an inclusive sports community. The statistics from 1977 show that the association already had 110 members, including 44 war disabled people and 19 civilians. From the beginning, the aim was to promote health through sports and swimming exercises, while socializing was always given high priority.

A look at the successes

The BSG now offers a wide range of sports - from bosseln to gymnastics to table tennis and blind bowling. A milestone in the club's history was receiving the award from the state of Lower Saxony in 1987, as 25% of the members took the German sports badge. Developments over the years document that the membership structure has changed, particularly in the last two decades, with an increasing proportion of seniors.

At a recent annual general meeting in the “King of Greece”, current chairman Udo Schinkel looked back on the challenges of the last few years. Despite the difficulties, especially caused by Corona, the members showed a clear willingness to get involved again. The meeting took place in a positive setting and those present discussed the possibilities of reviving activities, including exercise evenings in the Boitwarder gym and water aerobics in the Brommy Bad.

The voices of supporters

During the anniversary celebration, deputy mayor Jaqueline Günther praised the mutual support and friendship within the community - a strong sign of the inclusion that is practiced. Peter Büsching-Czerny from the Wesermarsch District Sports Association emphasized the central importance of the founding of the BSG for participation and equality. The association makes a significant contribution to overcoming barriers and promoting a vibrant community.

A look beyond the club's boundaries shows that inclusion in sport is an important issue not only in Brake, but also across the country. At a specialist forum organized by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) in June 2025 in Berlin, the progress and challenges of inclusion in sport were discussed. Numerous projects were presented here that aim to make inclusion in sporting structures a matter of course.

In conclusion, it can be said that the BSG Brake has developed impressively over the last 50 years and will continue to be a model of inclusion and community in the future.
