New splendor for Wilhelmhaven's Südstadt: Havermonicenstrasse under construction!
Something is happening in Wilhelmshaven, and not too short! The construction of Havermonicenstrasse is taking shape, and Mayor Carsten Feist is already raving about a future increase in the quality of life in the southern part of the city. As construction work progresses, traffic will also be relieved on Weserstrasse. From autumn onwards it will be possible to get directly from Havermonikenstraße to Am Handelshafen street. From August onwards, the square on the Am Handelshafen street will be transformed into an inviting green space that not only invites you to linger, but also offers space for playing and picnicking. The renovation is scheduled to be completed in November and will be carried out with the help of funding provided as part of urban development funding. The residents were also diligently involved and were able to contribute their ideas to the planning via the “Westliche Südstadt” redevelopment advisory board.
Investments for the future
With an investment sum of around 1.85 million euros, not only will the road be expanded, but the rainwater sewer system will also be brought into shape. The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. For this purpose, extensive preparatory work has already been carried out from December 2024, and the TBW (Technisches Bauwesen Wilhelmshaven) promises to keep the disruption during the construction period as low as possible. Pedestrian access to the buildings will be maintained throughout the entire construction period, and accessibility for emergency and rescue services will also be guaranteed. Wilhelmshaven.de has provided detailed information on this.
As part of this development, an old railway embankment will also be converted into a cycle path, strengthening the city's mobility concept. City planning officer Nikša Marušić is pleased about the improvements and emphasizes that the former slaughterhouse site should also be developed via Havermonicenstrasse. These projects aim to make the western southern part of the city attractive and to significantly increase the quality of life of the residents.
Future-oriented urban planning
The interaction between settlement structure, traffic and the environment is a central anchor point in urban planning. StädteTag emphasizes that long-term concepts are necessary to shape a city of the future. A collaborative approach is essential to integrate the needs of residents while finding sustainable solutions to current challenges.
The city can already look forward to a positive response from residents. The renovation and the planned naming of the new square show that not only is construction taking place here, but also that community exchange is being promoted. The people of Wilhelmshaven are looking forward to an upgrade of their surroundings, which will increase the quality of life and create new opportunities for encounters. Autumn 2025 will certainly be a special time when the first visitors can discover the new, attractive green space.
