Weekend at the Jade: Big festival with fireworks and live music!
On Thursday evening the time had finally come: the annual “Weekend on the Jade” began in Wilhelmshaven, an event that is all about festivities and maritime tradition. Mayor Carsten Feist and Frigate Captain Rolf Hoppe ceremoniously opened the festival, accompanied by the sounds of the Marine Music Corps. Visitors can look forward to a colorful program until Sunday that offers a mix of historical and modern seafaring, arts and crafts and entertainment. Loud NDR The organizers expect around 300,000 visitors.
The “Weekend at the Jade” has a long tradition. Originally started as a beach festival in 1950 with just 3,500 spectators, the event has steadily evolved over the years. “Jade Day” not only became a popular folk festival in the years that followed, but was also given its current name in 1966. The history of the festival is characterized by changing locations and themes, with the festival having been celebrated as a harbor festival at the Great Harbor since 1984, as Wikipedia explains in an entry about the event.
A festival for young and old
The entertainment of the little guests is also taken care of: There are numerous activities on the grounds especially for children, who can play in a cheerful atmosphere. The rides and the craft market, where local and regional works of art can be admired and purchased, are also particularly popular. In addition, more than 70 bands were hired to provide musical variety on seven stages.
The event ends on Sunday at 11 p.m. with a spectacular fireworks display sponsored by the Wilhelmshaven-based company Sparkasse Wilhelmshaven.
The safety of festival visitors has top priority. Around 200 barriers were erected on the access roads to ensure safe access to the event site. Security services are responsible for coordinating event security measures and ensuring that all guests are protected. This includes, among other things, the entrance controls that are necessary to keep out unauthorized substances, as well as fire security guards, which are indispensable in view of the various dangers posed by open fires and event technology, as the security service provider Aquila Security explains. According to Aquila, professionally implemented security concepts for folk festivals are crucial in order to counteract potential security risks such as vandalism and attacks.
This year, the event took place without any major incidents, despite adverse weather conditions such as rain and storms. With all the festivities and the anticipation of the big fireworks display on Sunday, many people also contributed. For example, the musician August Desenz collects between 450 and 500 euros at the festival. The “Weekend on the Jade” remains a highlight in the event calendar this year and attracts people from the entire region to the port city.
