Inselschule Langeoog wins sustainability award for innovative ideas!

Wonderful news from the heart of Langeoog: The island school won twice at this year's Wittmund district sustainability award. At the ceremonial award ceremony on Wednesday at the Hotel Noord in Carolinensiel, the school was able to impress in the “Ideas” category with its “Home on Langeoog” project. A total of 34 applications were received this year, among which the island school presented two exciting contributions that deal innovatively with the topic of housing and environmental protection. Well-known competitors included the fashion house Buddelei and the wine and tapas bar Korkenschrauber, but the creative work of the island school's students and teachers particularly stood out, as Langeoognews reports.

The “Home on Langeoog” project impressively shows that the school not only offers education, but also approaches to solving current social challenges. By building self-made homes, the island school is addressing the acute housing shortage that is pressing on the small North Sea island. The students learn technical skills that not only promote their creativity, but also make a valuable contribution to the quality of life on Langeoog.

Commitment to the environment

As part of her environmental commitment, teacher Kirsten Rottmann presented a schoolyard project in which students build charming birdhouses out of leftover pallets. These small works of art receive individual metal plaques and are sold through the school's support association. The island school's commitment is noticeable in the fact that it not only develops ideas, but also implements concrete projects that benefit nature.

In addition, the island school also remains active in other areas. Classes 7, 8 and 9 recently attended an educational event at the Klimahaus in Bremerhaven, organized by the Inselgrünen. They were accompanied by teachers Kirsten Rottmann, Min Wang and the headmistress. This initiative reflects the approach of putting education for sustainable development into practice and sensitizing students to issues such as climate protection.

Diverse educational offerings

In addition, the island school is not only environmentally conscious, but also offers a wide range of educational formats. As part of a writing competition, creative minds in grades 5-8 had the opportunity to write their own stories. For their efforts, the students won vouchers from the Krebs bookstore and an ice cream voucher from the Pinese ice cream shop. In addition, the students in the 7th and 8th grades realized exciting projects relating to mechanical engineering and drive systems using newly purchased construction sets. Such practical experiences are important in preparing students for future careers.

Another notable project was the use of stumbling blocks as a memorial to the victims of Nazi terror on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of liberation. Such honorary gestures are not only part of the school's mission, but also promote remembrance and engagement with history.

Overall, the Langeoog Island School shows that it is important to combine both environmentally conscious and educational policy issues. This holistic approach makes a significant contribution to social development and is a role model for other institutions. Projects like this set important trends for the future, especially as part of the national climate protection initiative, which supports numerous programs to support schools.

Stay tuned as we continue to report on the exciting developments on Langeoog!
