Wittmund Citizens' Market: Record attendance despite drizzle and parade!

On Friday, July 18, 2025, the 53. Wittmund Citizens' Market ceremoniously opened at 11:43 a.m. Despite the light drizzle, the market square was full of people looking forward to the hustle and bustle. Carsten Holzke, chairman of the Citizens and Tourist Association (BuVV), commented on the high number of visitors and the commitment behind this successful event.

Holzke was relieved to see that the Citizens' Market was able to host a large parade for the first time. The parade led from the town hall through the city center to the market square and was musically accompanied by the Mill Rose Jazz Band from Winschoten. Such a festive atmosphere delighted the citizens and ensured that the mood was great despite the weather.

Mayor clarifies critical issues

In his opening speech, Mayor Rolf Claussen did not miss the opportunity to address some critical issues. The controversies surrounding the Esens shooting king Achim Postert were particularly addressed. Claussen not only expressed his support for the rifle company, but also gave Postert the opportunity to prove himself as a worthy king. He also criticized local media reporting and described one comment as “not objective”.

At a time when volunteering is very popular, the BuVV's commitment was also highlighted. Claussen warmly thanked Arno Hildebrand, the outgoing patron, and introduced Marco Thies as the new patron, who opened the festival with an invitation to free beer.
