Fine dust alarm in Wolfsburg: air quality poor - what now?
In Wolfsburg, the air quality shows worrying values today, December 27, 2025. Several measuring stations have exceeded the limits for particulate matter (PM₂,₅), with the maximum value reaching an alarming level of 39 µg/m³. This means that the air quality is classified as “poor”, which can be problematic for the health of the population. The tiny particulate matter consists of particles that can damage the respiratory system, and this is exactly where the problem lies for many citizens.
The Federal Environment Agency points out that the assessment of air quality is not based solely on particulate matter. The Air Quality Index (LQI) also includes other pollutants, including ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide. For Wolfburg and many other cities, these are not the only locations where these unpleasant substances are particularly prevalent.
A look at the air quality index (LQI)
The LQI is created based on hourly measurements of the pollutants mentioned. The pollutant concentrations are divided into five categories, from “very good” to “very bad”. The signs in Wolfsburg are currently pointing to “bad”, which means that outdoor physical activities should be largely avoided or at least greatly reduced for those at risk. This recommendation is particularly aimed at people who are prone to respiratory diseases or who have other previous illnesses.
As the Federal Environment Agency explains, the recommended behavior varies depending on the value of the air quality index. While spending time outdoors should be limited if the values are very bad, if the weather is good you can enjoy the fresh air without worry. In Wolfsburg, however, the situation is anything but rosy. Most recently, nationwide highs of 56 µg/m³ were measured in Greppin - a value that sets off alarm bells.
Causes and effects of air pollution
But what are the causes of this high level of air pollution? A significant proportion is generated by industrial facilities, transport and the use of fossil fuels. Historically, emissions in Germany have fallen by around 64% over the last 30 years, but there are still regions that are suffering from stress. Urban areas are particularly affected. Loud Statista Studies show that many cities, even outside of Wolfsburg, struggle with high levels of fine dust pollution.
Especially at Christmas time, people like to enjoy the fresh air while taking a walk. But due to the current air quality, Cologne citizens should think carefully about when and where they go outside. Even if fine dust pollution in German cities is on average below the EU-27 average, there may be local outliers that can have serious consequences for the health of the population.
Therefore, stay informed and adapt your behavior to the air quality. The balanced combination of fresh air and protecting your health should always be a top priority.
