Partial closure on the Amsterdam Ring: diversions from October 30th!

Traffic in Aachen is facing a significant challenge: From October 30, 2025, 7:00 a.m., the Amsterdamer Ring/Kronenberg intersection will be closed to all traffic. This affects several important ASEAG bus routes and causes extensive diversions. The measures were necessary to ensure the transport infrastructure in the region and to improve the quality of life of the residents. According to aseag.de the following bus lines are affected: Line 4, Line 30, Line 43, Line N7 and Line V.

The diversions will result in changes to stops and routes, so passengers should pay attention to some changes. For line 4 in the direction of Hanbruch/Schwimmhalle West, the bus will be redirected between Schanz and Kronenberg via Vaalser Straße and Kronenberg. Lines 30, 43 and V in the direction of Uniklinik/Laurensberg Schulzentrum also take a detour via Lütticher Straße, An der Schanz, Vaalser Straße and Kronenberg. The Preusweg H.5 stop in the Amsterdamer Ring will no longer be available during this time; instead, the Preusweg H.1 stop on Lütticher Straße will be served. Other stops will also no longer be served in order to avoid loss of time.

New bridge construction in Aachen

In another current issue that will also affect the flow of traffic in Aachen, the demolition of a dilapidated bridge over the Aachen – Mönchengladbach railway line is pending. This step is necessary to ensure road safety. The state company Straßen.NRW estimates the construction time to be a good two years. During this time, the area of the bridge will be completely closed and traffic, including buses, will be rerouted. The first closure for this demolition will be from January to March 2026, the second in spring 2027, as wdr.de reports.

The bridge, part of Horbacher Straße, connects the center of Aachen with the north of the city. A temporary motorway access to the A4 in the direction of Cologne has already been set up to maintain traffic flow despite the construction work. A pedestrian tunnel will be available to cyclists during construction. The city of Aachen plans to closely monitor traffic during the construction work and adjust diversions if necessary.

Modernization of transport infrastructure

The measures in Aachen are part of a larger initiative to modernize the transport infrastructure in Germany. In total, there are around 40,300 bridges in the country, many of which were built between 1960 and 1985 and are now in urgent need of replacement. The challenge is to cope with the increasing demands of heavy traffic and to ensure traffic safety. A successful bridge modernization program focuses on improving the load-bearing capacity of these important structures, as documented by the BMM. Within the next ten years, a consistent core network is to be created that also includes the Aachen region.

These developments are both a burden for residents and commuters and a necessary investment in the future. However, with a little patience and the right information, the challenges of traffic in Aachen can be overcome.
