75 years of Bochum-Sheffield: Free entry to the fascinating exhibition!
A lot is happening in Bochum, especially in view of the long collaboration with Sheffield, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. The town twinning, which was founded in 1950, relies on gifts and the hope of friendship, which Alderman Percival Turner confirmed with a miner's lamp from Bochum and a knife from Sheffield, is still alive and active. Both cities, which have developed into renowned university locations with around 60,000 students in each city, are celebrating this bond with various events that are taking place as part of the exhibition "Bochum - Sheffield. 75 years of friendship and twinning" in the cultural history museum Haus Kemnade in Hattingen. Bochum.de reports on this exciting exhibition, which will be on view until September and provides information not only about the history but also about the important cultural connections between the two cities.
Entry to the events is offered absolutely free for anyone interested. On Thursday, August 21st, at 6 p.m., things get down to business: Dr. Stefan Schneckenburger from TU Darmstadt will give a lecture on a very special topic, namely “Poison and poison murders in Shakespeare (all purely plant-based!)”. This is not only an exciting insight into literary history, but also a look at the 250 characters who died in Shakespeare's works, around 15 of them due to plant poisons. During a subsequent exchange, Shakespeare's knowledge of poisons and how they differ from medicines will be discussed.
Cultural delicacies and more
On Sunday, August 24th, collector Werner Rudowski will also share his knowledge of historical measuring instruments from the 17th century. This presentation, which begins at 3 p.m., will focus specifically on measuring sticks and slide rules. A highlight will be the explanation of how to measure a barrel and determine the alcohol content of spirits. The audience can look forward to the presentation of the “Excise Officers Slide Rule”, a special slide rule developed for English tax officials.
But it's not just the Kemnade house where the celebrations take place. The program surrounding the town twinning is enriched by various events in Bochum and Sheffield. The “Unite the Union Brass Band” will perform during the Bochum Music Summer from August 29th to 31st. There is also a visit from the designated Lord Mayor Cllr Safiya Saeed, who will be in Bochum from May 23rd to 25th to revise the partnership deed. Citizens also have the opportunity to take part in a trip to Sheffield from September 8th to 12th, which features a varied program. These events are a beautiful opportunity to celebrate solidarity through art, culture and exchange.
The importance of town twinning
Bochum is part of a remarkable network of cities that is not just limited to Germany - there are an estimated 6,500 twin towns across Germany. deutschland.de highlights that most of these partnerships are with places in France, while many are also maintained outside Europe, particularly with the USA. This shows how important cultural exchange and friendship between cities are and what role city twinning plays in the international context.
The exhibition in Bochum and the diverse events celebrate the long-standing friendship between Bochum and Sheffield. An integral part of the local community, highlighting both the historical roots and the modern connection between the cities. Anyone interested in history and culture should take the opportunity to immerse themselves in this colorful partnership with all its facets. bochum-tourismus.de
